Paper cutting is a very intricate and delicate form of art. It involves making a piece of art out of a single sheet of paper by creating design through the use of positive and negative space. The paper provides the positive space whereas the negative space is created through carefully cutting out parts of the design, thus creating the desired image. Even a small piece of art may take several hours of work, with little or no room for error. Once a wrong cut has been made, it cannot be fixed or undone. So, the art does not just require an appreciation for design, but also the skilled use of fine motor muscles and concentration of mind and a high level of patience and determination.
I am a self-taught paper cutting artist, currently the only one doing this kind of work in Pakistan.
I like to explore a wide range of styles of designs, inspired by nature, calligraphy, abstract art and portrait. It gives me a sense of freedom and exhilaration when I am working on a piece, and the work involved gives me a sense of satisfaction and achievement when I complete it.
