Conferring with Emergent Readers

Conferring with Emergent Readers In this video Renee is conferring with emergent reader, Reilly. Reilly is working on building her identity as a reader, reading the pictures of the book, matching the words to the pictures, and adding her thinking to her reading by discussing her reactions and theories about the story.
Whether in brick and mortar classrooms or a distance learning platform, when we confer with students, our goal is to set them up to share their thinking with us. Our goal is to listen. When students share their thinking, we listen for ways to give them feedback, coach, or model next steps they can carry into their personal reading journey.
This virtual conference could be broken up into 2-3 different conferences:
- Who are we as readers?
- Reading the pictures, words, and adding my thinking
- Looking closely at the clues authors give us to read and think

What are you working on in your conferring practice?
