George Floyd Protests: Peaceful Protesters Defy Curfews Across the U.S.

George Floyd Protests: Peaceful Protesters Defy Curfews Across the U.S. Thousands of people marched in protest in cities from New York to Los Angeles as curfews went into effect to help police stem violence and vandalism. In Houston, tensions escalated with police after a peaceful gathering organized in part by the family of George Floyd.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she will expedite some planned reforms for the city’s police department and called for peace. Rhode Island is deploying the National Guard, while New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he doesn’t need outside help.

Protests are taking place in cities across the U.S. over the killing of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. The officer has been charged with third-degree murder. The incident has renewed outcry over excessive police force that helped spark the national Black Lives Matter movement.
