Here’s your unemployment update for Sunday, February 21st, 2021

Congress is pushing to renew the Paid Leave policy and provide another ten days for individuals to take off work to deal with illness, quarantine, or to care for a family member.

This also includes children affected by school closures and unavailable child care.

The first relief bill that was passed in March provided two weeks of paid sick time of family leave for public workers and employees with companies with less than 500 and more than 50 workers.

That provision is set to expire March 31 but would be renewed under the American Rescue Plan.

That means employees would get another ten days of paid time to use this year and Congress is poised to wave the exemption on small and large employers.

Under the new policy, the federal government would reimburse employers for total time off with the plan projected to cost $14 billion.

Meanwhile, Texas residents in many areas of the state are now able to apply for federal assistance if they were affected by the historic and devasting winter storms this week.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be able to provide aid after President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in the state.

According to FEMA, assistance may include financial aid for temporary lodging and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help residents and business owners recover.

FEMA says if you have insurance and are applying for federal aid, you must file a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible.

FEMA says the fastest way to apply is through disasterassistance.gov.

And finally, The Kansas Department of Labor says Phase 1 of the PEUC program extension has begun paying out to thousands of claimants.

A news release from the KOL said about 4,800 began receiving payments on Friday and around 370 Phase 2 and Phase 3 claimants will begin getting payments the week of March 1st.

The release said, “Due to the U.S. guidance and requirements, KDOL has had to write new code to update its antiquated mainframe technology and test the solutions to be able to execute the PEUC payments for Phase Two and Three claimants.”

PEUC provides up to 24 weeks of unemployment benefits.
