PINOT NOIR - WINE IN 10

PINOT NOIR - WINE IN 10 Pinot Noir is one of the oldest and most widely planted grape varieties in the world. It is also one of the greatest grape varieties in the world when it comes to expressing its origin – or its so-called terroir - in the glass

Pinot Noir likely originates in Burgundy and is probably a direct descent of the Vitis sylvestris. Pinot Noir was also known as the Morillion, Noirien, and Auvernat. Pinot Noir is also a great example of how our culture shapes the fortunes of grapes: Philip the second Duke of Burgundy was very important for the success of the variety – he passed a law in 1395 that outlawed plantings of Gamay and allowed Pinot Noir to become THE red grape variety in Burgundy. The Benedictines and Cysterians monks worked hard on improving the quality of the wines made from Pinot Noir and planted the varietal everywhere they went.
